HC Pat Hill introduced the green and red V on the back of the helmet in 1997. The "V" symbolizes Fresno State's pride in representing the San Joaquin Valley and the color green was selected to honor the importance of the agriculture industry to the region.

HC Jim Sweeney's wife Lucille passed away in 1988 and supposedly they wore a black stripe during the season for at least some games. The only photos I have from 1988 do not show the stripe.
